Whether you're saving up for a down payment on a new home, trying to pay off debt, or just want to have a little more cushion in your bank account, these tips are for you.
Saving money can be tough, especially when it feels like there's always something to spend it on. But it's something we must do to in order to build wealth.
If you follow these simple and effective hacks, you'll be well on your way to achieving financial success. So, let's get started!
01. Create a budget
Knowing how much money you have coming in and going out each month is key to being able to save money. Make a budget that includes all of your monthly expenses and stick to it. This will help you see where your money is going and identify areas where you can cut back on.
02. Cook at home
Eating out can be expensive. Cooking meals at home can save you money and can be healthier too. Cut back on dining out: Reduce the number of times you eat out or order takeout and start cooking meals at home instead.
03. Shop around for deals
Look for deals and discounts when shopping for groceries, clothes, and other items. Compare prices at different stores to find the best deals.
04. Cancel unnecessary subscriptions
Review your subscriptions, you'll be amazed at how many things you still pay for but do not use. Take a look at your monthly bills and subscriptions to see if there are any services or subscriptions you no longer need or can downgrade. Cancel any subscriptions or memberships that you are not using or can do without.
05. Use cashback apps
If you are not using Cashback apps like Ibotta and Rakuten, or coupons, you are leaving good money on the table. Cashback aps can help you save money when shopping online or in stores. Another big saving is by using cashback apps such as wayback for booking holiday reservations.
06. Cut back on energy usage
With the massive hike in electricity bills, it will certainly be helpful to turn off lights and appliances when not in use to save on your energy bill.
07. Buy generic products
There are definitely some brands we can't live without. But is the aldi wash up liquid really any different from the one at M&S to justify the price difference? This is probably not a great example, but think skincare, groceries, - it starts adding up. Generic products can be just as good as name-brand products and are often cheaper.
08. Don't buy bottled water
Except there is a health reason why you should, instead of buying bottled water, use a refillable water bottle and fill it up from the tap.
09. Negotiate bills
One thing I love about the UK (or any country) is how you can ring up your current service provider to negotiate a reduced contract. Always negotiate with your cable company, internet provider, and cell phone company to get a better deal or switch to a cheaper plan.
10. Plan your meals
When your meals are planned for the week, you avoid impulse purchases and waste. If you need some inspiration, here is a free meal plan you can try. It contains a grocery shopping list and well as 7 breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas for the entire week, based on the grocery list. Take a look and let me know what you think.
11. Start a savings account
Setting up a savings account and making regular contributions to it is a great way to grow your money.
12. Buy in bulk
Buy non-perishable items like toilet paper, soap, and cleaning supplies in bulk (if you have the space) to save money.
13. Use public transportation or carpool
If possible, use public transportation or carpool with others to save on fuel, parking and maintenance costs.
14.DIY
If there are projects you can DIY like home repairs, furniture removal or beauty treatments, go for it! These can save you tons of money. I remember saving £350 in one month for clearing out my basement myself instead of getting a clearing company.
15. Use a budgeting app
Use a budgeting app like Mint or YNAB can help you track your expenses and identify areas where you can cut down. If you are not too keen on getting yet another app use a simple google spreadsheet.
16. Sell unused items
Any unused items you have around the house, should be sold. This will declutter your space and, most importantly, make you extra money.
17. Make your own coffee
The Costa or Starbucks coffee ads up. A treat every now and then would not hurt. You'ld be surprised how much you save if you cut down on expensive coffee shop trips by making your own coffee at home.
18. Reduce entertainment expenses
I'm a bit on the fence about this one because I love all my TV subscriptions. But if you are not a fan of netflix, apple TV, Disney, consider cheaper or free forms of entertainment, such as visiting a park, library, or museum.
19. Pay off debt
Finally, make paying off debt a priority to reduce the amount of money you spend on interest charges.
Final thoughts
There are so many ways to save money. You may or may not be already doing some of this. I hope you found these useful.
